Mobile Web Becoming More Important

It's looking like more and more people will access the Internet using their cell phones, according to new data from comScore, and the trend isn't likely to reverse itself or even slow down anytime soon. So CEOs would do well to adapt, perhaps by optimizing their sites or creating mobile apps.
First, the facts. Jamie Gavin reported on the comScore Voices blog, "By October 2009 there were approximately 48m mobile subscribers aged 13 and over in the UK. Of these, 13.3m accessed the internet from a mobile browser and just under 17m used a mobile app."
Which would be impressive enough. Yet since smartphones account for just 17.5 percent of handsets in the UK, there's all sorts of room for growth in this arena.
Then here's one more key point: Gavin wrote, "Of all UK mobile internet users, 41% were aged over 35, proving that this phenomenon isn't the preserve of the young."
Businesses of every sort should be able to capitalize on mobile Internet usage, then, regardless of what they sell or who they target. Apps represent one way of grabbing an audience. At the least, CEOs should make sure their sites can be navigated from small screens.
